Consumers have returned to pre-pandemic visiting hours with evening share of visits in 2021 close to 2019. Both weekend and weekday visits increased in most recent quarter vs. 2019, but weekday visits are trending over weekend. Visit duration has dropped and more or less returned to pre-pandemic norms.

Physical stores are expected to account for 72% of U.S. retail sales in 2024. Top reasons for shopping in store include the ability to test products and the ability to walk away with product after purchase. While digital touchpoints may be convenient, physical stores offer sensory satisfaction.

COVID-19 Retail

When consumers were asked their most preferred shopping/delivery method, shopping at the store wins out regardless of trip purpose. However, online is more prevalent for large-sized trip types. When shopping in-store for groceries, 6 in 10 consumers take the time to make a grocery list, suggesting there is room to drive more impulse purchases.
