1 in 10 alcohol buyers shop for alcohol mostly or exclusively online. Over 1 in 4 consumers who buy alcohol online do so on a weekly basis. Given the high frequency of online alcohol purchases, regular delivery cycles are a convenient way of meeting consumers’ weekly needs and can aid retailers in securing share of throat.

Wine is the dominant beverage type purchased online. Wine is experiencing double digit growth online, though it is being outpaced by both spirits and beer. Wine buyers spend more on average per order and they purchase more frequently than spirits and beer buyers.

42% of consumers plan to celebrate the holidays like they did in 2019, while the majority expect to celebrate the holidays like they did during the pandemic. Behaviors expected to persist this holiday season include the gifting of alcoholic beverages online. According to Drizly, gift share of sales grew to 20% in December 2020 (vs. 9% in 2019).

Nearly 75% of consumers are shopping more online than they were a year ago. Shoppers are embracing a “mobile-first” mindset – nearly 3 in 5 consumers primarily use mobile when shopping online. With over 90% of consumers interested in texting with them, brands and businesses have an opportunity to capture consumers’ attention (and eCommerce revenue).
